The Ultrasound Technician follows the orders of radiologist or physician. They select and prepare ultrasound machinery for every specific examination. They explain procedure involved to the patients and record additional information, which could be useful to the physician later. They instruct the patients and help them into the right physical position in order to begin the test. Once patient is aligned properly, the technician applies gel to skin to improve diagnostic image. They select a device in the shape of a microphone known as transducer that directs sound waves of high frequency in area that is being imaged and adjust controls of the equipment as per the right depth of the field and the specific structure or organ that is being examined. The technician moves the transducer while monitoring the sound-wave display screen to ensure the production of a superior ultrasonic image. The technician would have to master visualization and location of the human anatomy for differentiating clearly between pathological and healthy areas.

On obtaining clear image, the Ultrasound Technician starts the machinery that records the individual photographic sequences or views as real time images of affected area. Such images are captured on videotape, film, strip printout, computer disk or magnetic tape. After recording the film is removed by the technician and prepared for analysis by physician. So as to discuss procedure with physician, the technician could record further observations or data that occurs in the course of the exam, if asked. The technician could undergo training in specialties like abdomen, echocardiography, obstetrics/gynecology, vascular technology, breast, neurosonography and ophthalmology. The other duties are updating the records of the patient, adjusting and monitoring sonographic equipment for maintaining accuracy and once considerable experience is gained, evaluating possible equipment purchases and preparing the work schedules.
